“When human respect is disintegratin’
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’”
An odd instance of nostalgia for me. A while ago, I happened to hear Barry McGuire’s Eve of Destruction — I couldn’t help but think the message still resonates today. I reached out to Barry to thank him for the song, and got a lovely reply from him and his wife, Mari.
His answer to my question about the genesis of Eve of Destruction:
“First, let me say, I didn’t write Eve of Destruction. It was written by a 19-year-old Jewish kid from Beverly Hills. His name was P.F. Sloan. P.F. Sloan did a rewrite for Eve called Eve 2012. Just go to YouTube and type Eve 2012 into the search engine.”
P.S. Sloan died a couple of years ago at the age of 70.
And Mari said, “Barry is now 88 years old and has retired from public life. We just celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. Life is good.”
The Trump regime’s shenanigans and the results fit right into the song’s ideas, don’t you think?
So many powerful lines in that song. It makes me want to revisit 70s music.
